The Upper Ganga Canal is primarily an irrigational canal system built for watering the Doab region between River Ganges and River Yamuna. It starts at Bhimgoda Barrage near Har ki Pauri and ends at Naru in Aligarh District. Here it bifurcates into Etwa and Kanpur branches. The main canal along with its branches has a combined length of 9575 km and irrigates more than 9000 sq km of land.

The construction of this canal started in 1842 at the behest of Sir Proby Thomas Cautley, an engineer of East India Company. It was to be an antidote of the disastrous famine that took place in 1837-38. The canal system was formally opened on 8th April, 1854. At that time, it was simply known as Ganga Canal. However, later as the canal system began to be expanded, the part running from Haridwar to Naru in Aligarh District (Uttar Pradesh) was renamed as Upper Ganga Canal and the rest is known as Lower Ganga Canal.
